Best BBQ in Baton Rouge

Best BBQ in Baton Rouge

When you are in Baton Rouge, you simply cannot miss the opportunity for a devastatingly good BBQ. Louisiana is known for some of the most mouthwatering, brilliantly spiced, tenderly cooked barbecue in the country, and Baton Rouge is one of the best places to try the many barbecue styles that have grown from Louisiana's unique culinary background. Whether you're craving succulent ribs off the bone, deep south homestyle brisket, or spicy cajun barbecue, you'll find it all right here.

We are honored to introduce you to six of the best barbecue restaurants in Baton Rouge to delight your tastebuds and enjoy portions so big you'll take some home.

Sonny's BBQ

Sonny's BBQ is one of the hottest spots in town, with great prices and huge portions. If you're craving classic homestyle barbecue with ribs, brisket, and brats, you've found it. You are served barbecue on individual trays with great sides like mac and cheese, baked beans, and giant slabs of buttered toast. Looking for a healthy balance? There's chicken, turkey, green beans and broccoli, sweet corn, and even salads. Or tater tots, fries, onion rings if you're not.

There are pulled pork and brisket sandwiches for lunch and, for dessert, your choice of chocolate chip cookies, banana pudding, and cinnamon sugar donut holes to share (or not).

The place is extremely family-friendly, great for big gatherings and people of all ages to get their hands covered in barbecue sauce and wash it all down with a big sweet tea.

Cou-yon's Cajun Bar-B-Q

Cajun cooking is one of Louisiana's signature styles, and you can try amazing Cajun barbecue at Cou-yon's Cajun Bar-B-Q. If you're new to Louisiana, you've probably never seen barbecue done like this before. The menu is enormous, with specialty sandwiches, barbecue platters, or meats a la carte.

The super long sides list includes cajun rice dressing, fried okra, cajun rice dressing, and mardi gras potatoes. In addition to classic barbecue items like sandwiches, brisket, whole chickens, and racks of ribs, there's also fried seafood and crawfish etouffee. Wash it down with a margarita or select beer.

For dessert, there's bread pudding with Jack Daniels Whiskey Sauce, fruit cobbler of the day with ice cream, banana pudding, or double fudge brownies.

BRQ Seafood and Barbeque

If you love Louisiana southern cooking and barbecue, here's where you can find both. BRQ Seafood and Barbecue is a favorite for large groups and families. The portions are huge, the flavors are amazing, and the selection is something you'd only find here in Baton Rouge. Instead of table bread, they serve kettle chips and sweet pickles for noshing. The appetizer list includes crab cakes. The sandwiches include pastrami and fried chicken, and the barbecue entrees include redfish, catfish, and shrimp.

They serve a hearty brunch (with cocktails). But what you'll never forget is their signature Jumbo Carrot Cake - a slice big enough to feed an entire family. And you will definitely leave with leftovers of everything.

City Pork Jefferson

City Pork Jefferson brings gourmet artistry to the Baton Rouge barbecue scene. While the setting is charmingly rustic with a wrap-around porch for terrace seating, every plate is a work of art. From the short ribs to the charcuterie boards and signature cocktails, if you want to enjoy a barbecue in style, this is the place. Got a date that loves tender barbecue meats? Impress them at City Pork Jefferson. If you need to wow a business partner or client, bring them here.

The menu is unique, to say the least, taking creative license with typical gourmet style, but the reviews rave about each signature dish. Of course, there are also barbecue classics, including pork, which you can't find everywhere.

TJ Ribs

When you want ribs, you know where to go. TJ Ribs describes themselves as "Babyback ribs & other hearty BBQ classics served in relaxed digs with sports on TV." and you can't get more succinct than that. Enormous and juicy ribs are served on a classic barbecue tray with buttery slabs of Texas Toast. There's also brisket, fried chicken, roast barbecue chicken, giant steaks, shrimp, and barbecue sandwiches. There's salmon, catfish, and etouffee, soup of the day, and brisket quesadillas.

Specialty sides include sweet potato fries, corn grits, carrot souffle, Mojo's seasoned fried potatoes, and creamy mac n cheese. Wash it down with beer and cocktails and top it off with desserts like cheesecake, brownie and ice cream sandwich, bread pudding with whiskey sauce, apple cobbler, or a scoop of vanilla ice cream with fruit topping.

Hannah Q Smokehouse

If you're looking for big BBQ portions to go, swing by Hanna Q Smokehouse. The menu is simple compared to the competition, focusing on smoked meats and fried seafood, burgers, and sides. There are soups and salads to fill out your meal, and everything is packed in an easy-to-take-home style. Their signatures include the brisket fries and pulled pork egg rolls. Locals rave about the tender brisket, the mac n cheese, and the extremely friendly service.
